In 2019, Jin and Michael relocated to Oxford from Charlottesville, VA. after purchasing just under 50 acres of land in Granville County. They quickly set about creating their perfect home site which included a small garden and even more modest chicken coop.
As friends and family came to visit each one expressed admiration for the new farm life much to Michael's chagrin. "It's not a farm!" was an expression oft repeated but destined to fall on deaf ears.
In the Spring of 2020 the excitement of a spring garden quickly gave way to disappointment. The selection of plants from the big box retail stores was underwhelming and more exotic vegetables were nearly impossible to find.
Jin was self-assured and certain that growing her own vegetables and ornamentals was easy enough. Michael, ever the curmudgeon, held steadfast to his claim, "we are NOT a farm!"
Of course, Michael's protests were lighthearted and they were both eager to start a new adventure with each other. Armed with a few seed catalogs and a sincere passion for plants, Notta Farm and Nursery was born.
What's coming next? Who knows.
Michael has always had an appreciation for the natural world around him while growing up in the Henderson area. His interest in plants developed during hi undergrad at East Carolina and led him to pursue a Master's degree at Virginia Tech. Owning a nursery helped him turn a hobby into something more while allowing him to avoid having to get a real job.
